MODEL United Nations

VICTORY

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

CONFERENCE (III) 2015

“The United Nations wasn’t designed to take humanity to heaven, but to save it from hell”  - Dag Hammarskjold, UN Secretary-General 1953-61

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and United Nations Day (24th Oct); the school hosted our annual SVP Model United Nations conference (22nd Oct), on the topic of Global Security Risks in the 21st Century.

This annual event is in its third year and has already become one of the largest inter-school Model UN conferences in the Jakarta region.

Key facts from the event

  • 100% not-for-profit (all proceeds reinvested into the learning experience)
  • 250+ student participants and student organisers (one of the biggest in Jakarta Region)
  • Girls as leaders with 75% of Committee Chairs being female
  • 12 Schools ; including Heerbeeck College Holland, and Green School, Bali
  • 11 Committees

Although everyone who participated was a winner for gaining the learning experience, it's always nice to celebrate the success of our own students, so congratulations to the following who this year picked up these awards;

The following is adapted from a memo from Liam Hammer (Head of School) who gave a speech in the opening ceremony and observed the event;

Congratulations to all the people involved in making the event a success. I have heard many positive comments from different participants, some of whom are repeat delegates, (that alone tells us something about how well we do it, that students and schools want to return). It takes a large committee of dedicated teachers and staff to ensure the smooth running of such an event.

I know our students gain immeasurably in terms of peer networking, confidence, debating, negotiating and friendships. Sure, our school gains prestige from hosting such an event, but that's not why we do it. We run events like this because we believe that the learning involved is valuable and worthwhile.

I understand that we were on TV yesterday and today, I saw some posts on twitter, facebook and news articles.

Truly, we are doing something right, so thank-you to all the service, Marcomm and other staff who help make it happen.

I look forward to MUN 2016!

We were also fortunate to have guest speaker Ibu Wati Wardani who is the Country Coordinator for Face-to-Faith Global Schools Programme, a part of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. We had a team of SVP student video makers who made an entry for the UNESCO International Day of Peace (21st Sept) competition.

All of this made the event a truly great collaboration between educators, students and leaders in a synergy promoting the values of peaceful dialogue.
